On a reduced-complexity shoreline model combining cross-shore and alongshore processes

چکیده
We present a new empirical shoreline evolution model integrating longshore and cross-shore processes. It is designed for wave-dominated sandy coasts and includes feedback between shoreline and wave dynamics. It can also take into account non-erodible (e.g. rocks, artificial structures) contours and complex wave propagation patterns through the coupling with the spectral wave model SWAN. While the longshore-transport-based modeling approach can reproduce the shoreline variability on large temporal scales, say from years to decades, inclusion of the equilibrium-based crossshore model enables shoreline variability to be addressed at the scales of changes in incident wave energy, say from hours to years. In this paper, the basic assumptions of the model are presented. The model is tested to synthetic cases before being applied to a real case scenario (Narrabeen Beach, Australia). Finally, guidelines for future model developments are given.

Observations of nearshore circulation: Alongshore uniformity
[1] Nearshore circulation, observed for 4 months on a 200-m-long stretch of natural beach during the SandyDuck field experiment, is shown to be alongshore uniform. An alongshore momentum balance between (wind and wave) forcing and bottom stress, cross-shore integrated between the shoreline and approximately 4 m water depth, holds on each of five instrumented cross-shore transects (skill 0.87). ...
متن کاملWavelet analysis of shoreline change on the Outer Banks of North Carolina: an example of complexity in the marine sciences.
The horizontal, shore-perpendicular change in shoreline position along the Outer Banks of North Carolina is found to be a self-affine signal. We measure shoreline change by determining the horizontal change in position of the 0.8-m contour sampled from shore-perpendicular profiles spaced at 20-m intervals along the coast. The profiles are obtained from two light detection and ranging surveys pe...
متن کاملSandbar Migration Due to Cross-Shore Sediment Transport; A Case Study of Noshahr Coasts, Iran
Cross-shore sediment transport is one of the effective factors in erosion and sedimentation, and affects dynamics of the beach profile in coastal areas. Furthermore, sandbar migration due to cross-shore sediment transport mostly effects beach nourishment, displacement of pollutions trapped in sediments, and organism and plants’ lives. In this manuscript, sandbar migration due to cro...
متن کاملExact Solutions for Wind-Driven Coastal Upwelling and Downwelling over Sloping Bathymetry
The dynamics of wind-driven coastal upwelling and downwelling are studied using a simplified dynamical model. Exact solutions are examined as a function of time and over a family of sloping topographies. Assumptions in the two-dimensional model include a frictionless ocean interior below the surface Ekman layer, and no alongshore dependence of the variables; however, dependence in the cross-sho...
متن کاملCharacteristics and dynamics of surfzone transverse finger bars
[1] Patches of transverse finger bars have been identified in the surf zone of Noordwijk beach (Netherlands). They consisted of three to nine elongated accumulations of sand attached to the low-tide shoreline. The bars extended up to 50 m into the inner surf zone, had an oblique orientation with respect to the shore-normal, and were quasiregularly spaced in the alongshore direction. We analyzed...
